School Choice Program

School Choice

Flagler County offers the School Choice program which allows parents and guardians to have their child/children attend a school of choice outside of their designated school zone.  This gives the opportunity for the parents to get the best schooling that fits the students personal education and athletic needs.  For general questions about the School Choice program contact the Office of Student and Community Engagement at (386) 437-7526.  Applications for the School Choice program can be acquired at the school site in which you are wanting you child attend, or on the district website.

Families will be notified whether their child has been accepted or declined for this program in a timely manner.  Records from the students previous school will be requested if the child is accepted into the program.  Flagler residents who are accepted need not apply the following years as long as the School Choice enrollment is maintained to the original school granted.

The school in which the student applies must have the capacity (available seats), meet the class size requirements, and maintain diverse enrollment in order for the student to attend their chosen school.  There will be a lotto system if there are more students that apply than the available seating giving all applicants an equal opportunity to attend their desired school.  Preference is given to siblings who already attend the destined school, and some students may be ineligible to apply.

There are some academic concerns when transferring students and is recommended to transfer the student at the end of the quarterly grading period.  This will help reduce the impact on grades and credits earned by the student.  You should contact the school counselor to get more information concerning academics.  In addition, athletic concerns may develop in which you should contact the school athletic director for guidance.

Florida Statutes and Administrative Rules require that transportation be provided for students living more than two miles from their school assignment. Transportation outside this area will be deemed the parents responsibility unless the student meets one or more of the following requirements.

  1. The student is assigned to Exceptional Student Education Programs and the program(s) are not provided in the students current school zone.
  2.  The student is a secondary student enrolled in a comprehensive program not offered in their school zone.
  3. Eligible students for whom school of origin is determined to be in the student’s best interest by the school district’s McKinney-Vento Liason or for foster children as determined by the established process aligned with requirements in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
